There are those that excessively focus on intentions as the litmus for being righteous. While I do not subscribe to this ideology, there is merit in the notion that like Paul, we do not do what we wish to do. Here, Jesus recognizes that there can be good in people’s hearts. I have vacillated back and forth on the theory “x” and theory “y” regarding the human heart. Clearly, some people are basically good and some are basically bad. Perhaps, that is what is meant by the elect.

No one has a pure heart, therefore no one shall see God. There is only one who has a pure heart and pays our debt completely. Through Jesus we will see God. How appropriate during this Holy Week we contemplate the greatness of Jesus and what he accomplished for us sinners.
