Matthew 5:33-37

Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.

Note: These verses continue to elaborate on Matthew 5:20 regarding righteousness that “exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees”.

I’m reading through James chapter 3 and the importance of how we use our words is emphasized. Being fallible human beings, I think Jesus is saying, ‘don’t be stupid here and vow something with exaggeration. Be humble and know your weaknesses in doing right “.

Having to swear or make oaths shows the weakness of your word. It demonstrates that there is not enough weight in your own character or what you say to confirm your words.

Luther came out against vows with vengeance. The Catholic Church was his foil, but we all have this tendency toward making pronouncements about what we will do and not do. These are practical messages from scripture that we can all heed.
