Matthew 5:29-30

If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.

Note: These verses continue to elaborate on Matthew 5:20 regarding righteousness that “exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees”. Jesus is revealing new information about eternal life, i.e. that the consequence of sin is more than death of one’s body, that “your whole body (will) be thrown into hell”.

I am pretty sure that Jesus meant that we must be willing to sacrifice to become obedient and not sin.
I don’t think losing a member of your body will stop you from sinning, as you still have your mind and heart at work.

I wonder if on occasion we think about scripture on an excessively personal level. Perhaps, Jesus meant we should maintain a culture of people who reject sin and try not to sin. Perhaps our culture is being thrown into the hell of fire be use of our persistent endorsement of sin.
