According to Paul, see the first 4 chapters of Romans, the Jews were never made righteous by statute, righteousness was always attained by faith alone. Before Jesus it was through faith in God. Today it is through faith in Jesus, but it has always been through faith, not the law.

The law was important, and God wanted his people to follow it, but it's purpose was never salvation.

Jesus lays out a new way of thinking about sin which pushes righteousness out of reach. This, at once, sets a tone for a Christian culture and drives home the message that Jewish legalism is no longer the desire of God. Perhaps, Jews reject this idea because it does away with all their righteousness by statute, which our culture seeks today.

Jesus said, if you commit murder, you are in danger of judgment. You are also in danger of judgment, if you have murder in your heart against your brother.
I guess, calling someone a fool shows contempt for their character and makes them subject to the same judgment. It all resides in the heart.
