Only a humble heart is teachable. Poverty of the soul sees the need for the enrichment of Christ.

If you are not humble then how can you be merciful to others?
I think everyone, in varying degrees, is poor in spirit and must “beg” for forgiveness, mercy and grace.

Is this similar to the idea that ignorance is bliss?

St. Augustine of Hippo wrote in the fourth century that wealth is how God curses evil. Wealthy people focus on the wrong things because of their wealth, how they can grow their wealth and power, how they can use their influence to manipulate others, corrupt thoughts.

The poor focus on obtaining their daily bread, feeding their family, and turn to God for guidance rather than relying on their own meager resources.
