On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.
Matthew 22:40
Jesus is God. *
Both the Old and New Testaments are the word of God.
When we read the New Testament, we hear Jesus reiterating and emphasizing much of what He had already taught in the Old Testament.
In the posts below, all of Jesus’ teaching in the New Testament book of Matthew is compared to verses with similar meaning from the Old Testament scriptures, i.e. from “all the Law and the Prophets”.
The people to whom Jesus spoke knew the Old Testament scriptures, even though in many cases, God’s original meanings had been twisted by the culture and religious authorities.
When Jesus spoke to people, they would have contemplated his meaning based on the context of the word of God that they already knew, which is the Old Testament.
Looking at Jesus’ New Testament words with the Old Testament verses can help us understand truths that God has been telling his followers all along and to recognize more clearly what is new revelation by Jesus.
Jesus meant it when he said…
Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
Matthew 5:17
In these posts, we rely heavily on actual scriptures in the Bible, minimizing editorial in our own words, because …
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
2 Timothy 3:16-17
In each post, read the words of Jesus and contemplate the meaning. Then read and contemplate the meanings of the similar Old Testament verses.
