Matthew 7:24-27

Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

Note: Here Jesus concludes the Sermon on the Mount, explaining that the purpose of his teaching is to provide wisdom that will benefit us if we hear and do what he says.

Similar Old Testament Verses

Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding, for the gain from her is better than gain from silver and her profit better than gold. She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire can compare with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her; those who hold her fast are called blessed.

Proverbs 3:13-18

My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart. For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh.

Proverbs 4:20-22

Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the LORD, would have none of my counsel and despised all my reproof, therefore they shall eat the fruit of their way, and have their fill of their own devices. For the simple are killed by their turning away, and the complacency of fools destroys them; but whoever listens to me will dwell secure and will be at ease, without dread of disaster.

Proverbs 1:29-33

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Proverbs 1:7

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. The wicked are not so,
but are like chaff that the wind drives away.

Psalm 1:1-6

Thus says the LORD: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the LORD. He is like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see any good come. He shall dwell in the parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land. “Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD,
whose trust is the LORD. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.

Jeremiah 17:5-8

Whoever is wise, let him understand these things; whoever is discerning, let him know them; for the ways of the LORD are right, and the upright walk in them, but transgressors stumble in them.

Hosea 14:9

When the tempest passes, the wicked is no more,
but the righteous is established forever.

Proverbs 10:25

The wicked are overthrown and are no more,
but the house of the righteous will stand.

Proverbs 12:7

This is why it’s so important to build a good foundation with children when they are beginning to grow. The stronger the foundation, the more they will withstand trials.
It is better to shape a child then it is to repair an adult.

Good point Bruce, I have not done that well.
This study has most certainly laid OT next to NT in a topic by topic comparison. Wonderful idea Doug and execution. I can see why some argue that the God of the OT is a different one from the God of the NT. One clear difference is the OT ideology that righteousness results in a good life while not following God’s rules results in bad things. This, of course, is only partly true. The NT contrasts this ideology with the message that we should try to live righteously, but will not be able to, and that’s okay. As long as you try, it will work out. This too, is only partly true. We are left with only hope that there will be justice in the end. Many today find such pipe dreams irrelevant. I am sympathetic to their views. Faith has no balm to ease its difficulty. Faith must come from the Holy Spirit, or it doesn’t come. This is in our essential tenets, and rightfully so.
Thank you Doug! Well done my friend.
